Overall Index The PNC-CS Investor Sentiment Index (PNC-CS ISI) ticked slightly lower in October after two consecutive months of higher readings. Investor optimism, as measured by the poll, is still easily above the 2018 low reached in April; however, recent momentum slowed as equity markets became more volatile and midterm elections approached. The October 2018 results reflect a generally sanguine outlook regarding the market and the economy, combined with cautious undertones given the myriad uncertainties that must be considered. U.S. real GDP growth remained strong and beat consensus estimates in the third quarter, rising at a 3.5% quarter-over-quarter annual rate. [...]

Optimism Continues to Increase amid Higher Equity Markets and Trade Progress

Overall Index The PNC-CivicScience Investor Sentiment Index (PNC-CS ISI) ticked higher again in September, reflecting further upward momentum. Investor optimism, as measured by the poll, has reached its highest level since January 2018. After peaking in January at 55.1, sentiment began to fade, falling to a 2018 low of 48.8 in April. Since then, the index has fluctuated within a fairly narrow range, however, the September reading of 52.4 reflects growing optimism after August’s reading of 50.5 was also an increase from the prior month. After peaking in January at 55.1, sentiment began to fade, falling to a 2018 low of 48.8 in April. After peaking in January at 55.1, sentiment began to fade, and has steadily declined to 49.8 in July. The July 2018 results reflect a slight softening in optimism from poll participants. The PNC-CS ISI moderated to 49.8 in July, from 50.5 in June. Overall Index The PNC-CivicScience Investor Sentiment Index (PNC-CS ISI) moderated in June, reflecting cooler optimism than in May. Investor optimism, as measured by the poll, had been steadily rising from September 2017 through January 2018. After peaking in January, sentiment began to fade and declined in each of the next three consecutive months. In May, the poll results rebounded off of April’s low reading, before easing a bit in June. The June 2018 results reflect a slight softening in optimism from poll participants, after May’s sharp rise higher. The ISI moderated to 50.5 in June, from 51.2 for May (Chart 1). [...]
